Much thicker surface oxide films that give enhanced corrosion resistance to aluminium and its alloys can be produced by various chemical and electrochemical treatments. The natural film can be thickened some times, to say 1–2 μm, by immersion of components in certain hot acid or alkaline solutions.

The model, which under certain assumptions enables one to predict the conditions for self-ordering of porous anodic oxide film (AOF) on aluminum in the weak and strong acids, is proposed. The melting point of aluminium oxide is °C ( K), much higher than pure aluminium's °C ( K).
